Animal or Ice

High up in the cold grey mountains
The rock is cruel and it bites clean through
Flesh that hasn’t had a chance to
Soft skin hardens twitches cold wind stabs
Poking searching every crevice
Filling every space with the chill air
Insulating fur is what’s needed
Thick animal skin wrap and protect
Trapped and alone
So far from home
Animal or ice?
Which will kill you first?
Good warm boots to keep the feet dry
So important to keep the feet dry
Heat the air entering the lungs
Long deep inhalations through the nose
Do not panic, don’t breathe too hard
Just move, don’t fall asleep in the cold
Must protect the nose from frost bite
So easy to lose the nose and digits
Trapped and alone
So far from home
Animal or ice?
Which will kill you first?
You have to fight that much harder
When the hallucinations begin
Fever dreams bears things much larger
Teeth claws insatiable hunger
Once they get the taste for man flesh
They will hunt for you relentlessly
Fire flame is your only chance
To fend off beasts that encircle you
Trapped and alone
So far from home
Animal or ice?
Which will kill you first?

Now surrounded by a pack of dire wolves death will be quick
This young human creature unarmed all alone wolves lips they lick
As the wolves pounce there’s a blinding flash of white light
They are thrown back, fur singed and their eyes cauterized
The wolves they scamper away yelping in pain
Strange man with white staff now stands by the boy
A magician he must be, a conjurer, of the dark arts
“I have watched you many days now- why have you come alone and unarmed?”
“I am alone and have never had any sword
My tribe has been slaughtered by the Wild Men from the North.
I hear tell of a great cache of weapons
I seek the means to avenge my slaughtered brothers.”
“I will lead you to the cave’s mouth - To retrieve the weapons you seek.”
Now he hands him magic torch to light his way through the pitch black cave
In the cave the boy faces perils without and in
Many times he nearly dies as he works his way down
Through chambers false he finally finds what he seeks
Shield, armor and sword shimmering bright as sun on ice

The Boy is now a man
10 long years he has fought
Gathered an army 1,000’s strong each of them a loyal friend
Now on the slopes of the Northern Mountain finally it will all end
The dead lay all around
The wounded scream in pain
Frost bite has taken limbs, Hunger has taken their lives
Now with his elite guard, He makes his way toward the peak
Leader of the Wild Men, he is a gargantuan
At almost eight feet tall, Clad in furs and human scalps
The father he lies dead
The mother hacked apart
The Boy yelling… something? Something? Something in his savage tongue
That the Wild Man didn’t understand It was a vow of revenge
To one day take the life
Of each last one of them
With each blow of the sword The Boy jumps out of the way
Giant lunges at the Boy impales himself on the sword
Seeing their leader slain Wild Men they lay down their arms
No quarter is given slaughters each and every one
